If I ever thought we had problems occasionally with attacks on the forum toward the forum itself or toward individuals and what action to take and whether to intervene, delete posts or threads and whether to take responsibility for what individuals post on our forum ......... The row going on at mumsnet re comments made about a once very active member of their boards and very famous author of parenting books and a celebrity on the media on parenting 'Gina Ford' is hugely is more than we have ever had to deal with ..................... but actually very worrying in terms of the implications of freedom of speech in forums such as ours if Gina Ford wins her litigation against Mumsnet. it is hard to explain what this is all about but if you are interested read the following links: www.mumsnet.com/lw/state.htmlwww.mumsnet.com/ginaford/state08082006.htmlcommentisfree.guardian.co.uk/justine_roberts/2006/08/mumsnet.htmlIf anyone with more knowledge or understanding of the law and what this could mean in terms of our freedom in these sorts of services to let women 'say what they like' might mean- or if it would mean anything let me know A lot of forums are worried about this and watching the outcome with interest VeriteeX

Very interesting debate Veritee...
Freedom of speech is such a tricky issue on the internet, but I think the policy you've held here where you keep all posts with the exception of abusive or obscene ones is the right one. As the Guardian article says, it would have been much better if Gina Ford had taken a middle line and requested that the most abusive posts were removed, whilst maintaining the essence of the debate.
It would be a shame if Gina Ford wins this litigation as surely she realises that polarising opinion about routine versus flexiblity can only sell more books for her?!? And the longer the debate keeps going on mumsnet, the more people will be interested in her books to see what all the fuss is about.
Keep us posted with any developments
Love Naomi x
