Hi, sorry for starting new thread, its just that Im going downhill and Im terrified i will get worse, and the implications that brings (s/h etc).
I was wondering about St Johns Wort, is there anyone who has had experience with this, I dont know anything about this apart from its supposed to help with depression and there are no side effects - is this true? I've not been on any medication since I took myself off meds in September cause i didnt think they were doing any good and I felt like i had a permanent hangover. I dont want to go onto more meds cause Ive tried so many and i do suffer from any and most side effects - there's not much of me and I suffer low blood pressure, so a lot of meds have made me faint. I dont want to feel numb, or hungover anymore, my therapist is pleased im not on anything cause apparently I need to feel in order to heal and move on. Im still breastfeeding, though not much and mainly just at night, has anyone else taken these whilst breastfeeding, and what is the "official" take on this. Any advice on this would be gratefully appreciated, especially personal experience, I dont want to get any lower cause I know i would be a danger to myself. Thanks, luv Bean x

Hi Bean,
I always keep up-to-date with your posts (diary) but don;t think i have ever posted back to you yet, so Hi.
I previously posted on NewModels thread in this section regarding St Johns Wort so you could maybe take a look at that? Also have you ever tried anything else, Hypnotherapy, Reflexology? I have recently had a session of hypnotherapy and although i am finding it tough (you have to keep working on it afterwards) it is helping. I was having panic attacks and severe anxiety and this has lessened and i;m sure the more i work on it the more it will lessen? I;ve also had reflexology, which is fantastic, it totally de-stresses you although it can be expensive.
I'm not sure any of this has helped but if you need any more info just ask and i'll try and find out if i don;t already know!!!

Reflexology... I think I have mentioned here somewhere before that I was told many years ago that I couldnt conceive. We tried for many years unsuccesfully, then after 2 months of reflexology was pregnant! I swear by it...

Thanks Sarah and Winegirl, I have actually done short course couple of years ago, learning how to do reflexology and basic massage, also aromatherapy. I think reflexology is ace, but thing is with learning it, you can help everyone else but cant do it to yourself, also cant afford any treatments at mo. Thanks for advice though. I was really interested in the St Johns Wort, have either of you been on it, I was looking for something to try to lift my mood but dont want to have any side effects like on meds I have been on. Thank you. bean x

Hi Bean,
I am currently taking SJW (from tesco, about £3 to £4 for 60 tablets 170mg standardised extract). Just like you I didn't have great experience of AD (tried prozac/fluoxetine for 6 months in 2006 and also Zoloft/Sertraline). I wouldn't say SJW has no side effects, although I am not experiencing any, but everybody is different, and it has active ingredients so it is possible to react to it in some undesirable way. If you take it, let your GP know as apparently it can interact with other medication, even double check as I am not sure if it does interact with the contraceptive pill.
I have been taking SJW for ... a few months now, and I am now increasing to 3 tablets a day, most days I take only 2 (AM and PM). With taking only 1 a day, I found improvement -can't tell if it was due to that though to be honest- it was minimal, but enough to keep me hoping, taking it and even thinking of increasing the dose. With me what worked as well was to take something, as I have been for so long going with nothing, struggling every day, seeing myself sinking and feeling not able to do anything to stop it... so every time I was popping the pill I was telling myself it might help me, and it did! >>> I am also breastfeeding, my little girl is 9 months, she seems fine with it. I am really concerned about taking anything while I breastfeed her, and this is why I haven't been taking AD, and I look after her like a hawk looking for any signs of problems... And of course there's always what we cannot see.
I also have problems with anxiety, intrusive thoughts, anger, mood swings, self harm, eating disorder (those last 2 are really improving though!!!) and I am still in therapy too.
I am sorry to hear that you are suffering so much at the moment, and I hope I can answer a bit your question with the above, although I am sorry to say it is such an individual choice and yes we can feel (and ultimately are) so alone with it.
If you have any more questions, please don't hesitate.
Aline

Thanks Aline, helps knowing you're breastfeeding too. Think I will try to give it a go, R has day off tomorrow so maybe try to get to tescos. My s/h has improved recently but the urge is back now, also as I find myself declining, the eating thing rears its ugly head too. Thanks for your advice lucv bean x

::)Rang my shrink today (she was in charge of my medication when I was on it) for advice on SJW, she told me not to go near it with a barge pole, she said there's no evidence either way with breastfeeding, cause its herbal and they dont monitor like anti ds. She didnt have much to say about herbal remedies cause she doesnt prescribe them, just told me I dont need them. (to be honest, she doesnt think much of any anti ds - thinks medication is not the answer). So that's that! thought i had an answer for some extra help there. Feel despondent, probably go back to the burning/cutting therapy (sorry, wrong section I know). Thanks anyway for everyone's advice. b x

Hi Bean, Wow, that's interesting... I never had anyone really telling me to not take it, and never heard anyone say "bad" opinion about it before either - which is good to hear in a way as it rebalances things. The good thing, I would be delighted to be told the same is - she thinks you don't need it. Did you manage to get through it before and she wants you to remember that? I am sorry to hear that it looks gloomy ahead for you but remember that it can be different, especially since you do all the things to get better! Have you tried relaxation, hypnotherapy, massages (reflexology) to get you through this bad patch? It's time consuming but it can work wonder - and you ought to be worth it (((HUGS))) Aline

Hiya,
WOW i can't believe she actually told you not to touch it!! Yes she may believe you don;t need it but you are the one who knows how you are feeling and what your thoughts about it are. Have you mentioned what the alternatives would be (s/h?) ??
Yes they might not monitor it like 'conventional medicine' but surely if it has/had proved to be dangerous it would not still be sold in supermarkets/health shops etc.
Sorry if you don;t agree but it really gets my back up when so called health professionals tell you what you can and can't do, they are there to advise and help not give you orders!! (rant over)
Don't know how you feel about trying SJW now but don;t let your shrink make the decision for you.

Bean - your shrink is a moron. There is so much evidence to prve the benefits of SJW! The only time you shouldnt take it as far as I know is if on the pill (very bad) or with other anti d's.
Please tell your shrink from me to stop talking b******s. And if it is that bad why do people buy it? Stupid mare.
