Whilst lying in bed last night I had a flash of indignation at how little pregnant women are imformed about risks and signs of PND and PP.
I feel that there should be some kind of standardised leaflet given to all pregnany women at their first antenatal appointment and also in the Bounty Packs, that informs them about all forms of PNI, what the signs are and who to contact for help if you feel you are suffering from it.
How much less scary would it have been for me if I had heard of PP and we knew what was happening, instead of ending up in A&E and feeling lost and scared.
If anyone thinks this is a good idea and has any ideas about how to go about producing such a leaflet and what the content should be, feel free to post. Perhaps it could be something that PNI.org.uk sponser?
I guess there would be all kinds of hurdles to jump over to make this a reality but I truly believe it would help many women out there. Afterall, there is so much information given about everything else why not mental health?

Sorry that is happening for you. What do have in mind? To be honest Post natal depression is only a recently talked about illness due to some celebrities talking and then not much. Its as if its wanting to keep things under wraps until something happens but then again mental illness generally is like that. Its only if you have been there you truely understand.

The irony is I actully work in mental health and had never heard of it when I was pregnant secound time round I remember thinking there is nothing about post partum psychosis written in bounty packs ie emmas diary if only there was I am sure that more could be done in educating people and that new mums are aware of symptoms and what or who to contact if they think they might have it , at the moment I feel fully recovers from my secound bout of pp iam off medication my daughter is a year old and iam planning to go back to work but I feel I need to help others ie new mums at the moment iam in talks with a soliciter as I had no support from gp or midwife secound pregnancy I was high risk and should have been refferd for psychiatric assessment had this have been done I would have been monitored and could of had medication either prior to delivery or straight after birth instead I was discharged straight home with no care plan in place resulting in me suffering at home unroll the ninth day when I was so parinoid and exhausted due to no sleep that I had to go informally to my hospital where I work I was then sectiond and had been seperated from my new baby for two weeks as I was at a mental health unit not m and b unit basiclly what I'm trying to say is had I have been refferd in my pregnancy would all of this had to happen not saying I wouldn't have got pp again but the choice for medication to be given was not there I feel I ranting on sorry just feel really angry and let down by nhs xx

Totaly forgot to answer your question as I was babaling on ! Don't really know how to go about it could write to the editor of emmas diary/bounty ask them to publish article in their book/pack also contact royal collage of midwifery and ask them to devise a leaflet as standard that all expecting mums get signs to look out for , who to contact etc? You would think this would have been done years a go all it would be is simple information on a piece of paper not to much to ask for really is it ! If it could help so many women not having to suffer I know it would have been a god send if this had been availible when I was pregnant first time round xx

Hi girls
Am pregnant with my 3rd child and the new pregnancy book from the NHS has a whole section on mental health including a large section on PND and a short section on PP.

Thats great Kat! At last they are getting the info out there! Does it list any of the anxiety type symptoms in there?
