am i right in thinking that using 2 condoms is actually less safe than using one as it can lead to friction from each other causing a split??
Hope you get that appt soon Sarajay!

OK very technical WG, laughing at you and the menopause thing, just remember condoms, 39, under a home treatment team, no period, breastfeeding and still managed to make one mistake and get pregnant. Me I am for belt and braces now. Husband is going to ask surgeon to remove everything not just the baby so there is no further risk. My advice to you all is no sex and a metal chastity belt

Just a quick update on the situation, had the coil out mid april and had a 'period' about a week later felt fine, been using condoms (got a heap free from the nurse who took out my coil) and so far so good. I have still been keeping a record of my moods/symptoms and have to say the anxiety has reduced dramatically!! woo hoo!
Will continue doing the same for next month or so then go and discuss my options with my gp...........watch this space!

Hi ladies, just putting my vote in for an old-fashioned copper coil (IUD or intrauterine device)! I have one and it's great - I tried the combined pill at first after my child's birth but it made my mood worse, I then asked for an implant but they wouldn't put it in as I have had PP and any form of hormonal contraception can make things worse. So they recommended a coil instead. Someone said it isn't used much anymore, but it is most definitely still used, it's just that it has fallen out of popularity somewhat in recent decades with other things like the implant now being available, and is not an option very suitable for young women who have never been pregnant because it's more tricky to fit (not the case for most women here I guess). I think a lot of people just don't really know about it or think of it as an option, or quickly dismiss the idea because they just feel squeamish at the idea of having something inside you permanently. And someone else said it is as effective as condoms, it is actually WAY MORE effective than condoms, failure rate of condoms is around 12% a year (i.e. 12 women out of 100 using condoms alone for contraception will get pregnant in a year), the coil's failure rate is less than 1%(i.e. less than 1 out of 100 women with a coil will get pregnant in a year), similar to someone taking the pill and never forgetting to take it on time. It is put in once and then you don't have to worry about it for 5 years, at which point you need to get it changed so that it continues to be effective (once you hit mid-40s, you may be able to leave it in for 10 years) It contains no hormones, so cannot possibly mess with your mood. Drawbacks are that it can cause heavier bleeding for most women (unlike a mirena coil, which tends to stop periods after 6 months or so as the hormone in it gradually spreads over the surface of the womb and thins the lining), that some women have ethical/religious problems with it (as it works partially by blocking sperm from meeting the egg but also partly from preventing a fertilised egg from implanting into the lining of the womb - the morning after pill also works this way), it may slightly increase your risk of pelvic inflammatory disease if you have had previous STDs or womb infections, or have multiple sexual partners (!), it will obviously not protect you from STDs in the way a condom does, and VERY VERY RARELY it can "get lost", or perforate the womb and it can occasionally cause problems with a baby growing if you do somehow manage to get pregnant with a coil present in the womb. That said, I personally think it's the obvious choice for someone who has suffered from PNI and doesn't want another baby within the next year or so, unless they have very heavy or erratic periods (in which case, I recommend a mirena coil - it is rare for it to cause mood problems as the hormones work locally on the womb although it is clearly still possible from posts above), or have had issues with STDs or womb infection previously, or have multiple sexual partners. Hope this helps! Contraception is always a very personal choice but I do think it is best to avoid hormones if possible if you have suffered from PNI.

Haven't been around for a while but am back now. Just been reading over everything that has been written here and i must admit i have thought alot about this over the past few weeks. We had a mishap with the condoms a couple of weeks ago and i went and got the morning after pill but apart from that i am getting on great with having no hormones floating around my body.
Its funny cos i was talking to rob about it this morning and we were saying how much my moods have changed (for the better) since having my coil out, so that was obviously causing a few problems!
Gonna phone for that appointment with the GP first thing cos i now have 3 full months worth of 'mood charts' to take along with me proving that the coil had been having a huge impact on me.
Will keep you updated! and thanks everyone.xx

Hi Sarajay
great to see you back, well you did influence me and really grateful you did as would have hated to have made the wrong decision, told the consultant I wanted my tubes tied at my section, so no chance of any more pregnancies or mad mishaps.

Hey Kat,
Good for you for deciding to take action! lol. Seriously though, if you are sure that you don't ever want anymore babies then go for it. I am in a dilemma cos although i know i don't want anymore children (purely because of the SPD and PNIx2) my hubby would like us to have more. I have 3 biological children but he only has 1 biological child so i understand his point but i really really don't want anymore!! If it was purely my choice then i would go and get sterilised tomorrow but as i have to think about his wishes too then long term contraception it is!!
I have an appointment for thursday with my GP to discuss this so will see what conclusion we come to!

ok conclusion made.......after discussing the 'hormone' problem with my GP we have decided that the best course of action for long term contraception is the copper coil!!
No hormones, long term contraception and no babies! yay
Sorted!!
Getting it fitted at the end of the month.!!
