Title of Project: Experiences of Postnatal depression: Women’s views of having their mental health needs considered and supported during the perinatal period.
Name of Researcher: Jennifer Riley
School/Faculty: Liverpool John Moores University, Faculty of Education, Health and community.
You are being invited to take part in a research study if you have experienced Postnatal depression. Before you decide it is important you understand why the research is being done and what it involves. Please take time to read the following information and decide if you want to take part or not. Please only participate if you have had previous experience of PND and are not currently suffering from it.
What is the purpose of the study?
I am an undergraduate student and I am conducting a small-scale student led research project for my dissertation. The Purpose of the study is to find out how or if support has changed in recent years by exploring women’s views and experiences of perinatal mental health problems and if they felt supported during and after pregnancy, what barriers they faced and if they felt support was effective and beneficial for their recovery. I am undertaking the research as part of my University dissertation project. I have an interest in this particular topic so have used it for my project work.
Do I have to take part?
No, it is voluntary, it is up to you to decide whether or not to take part and there will be no consequences for those who do not wish to participate. If you choose to take part, you will be asked to read the implied consent statement at the beginning of the questionnaire. You are still free to withdraw at any time; however, once I have received the completed questionnaire it will be impossible to withdraw consent due to anonymity.
What will happen to me if I take part?
Should you decide to participate in the study, you will be asked to fill out a questionnaire based on twelve questions. Some questions require a tick box and some will ask you to explain your answers in more detail. This should take no longer than ten minutes and there is no time limit so please do not feel pressured to rush the questionnaire. You do not have to answer any questions that you feel you are unable or unwilling to answer. By filling out this questionnaire you are giving inferred consent. The questionnaire is to be sent back on completion.
To complete the questionnaire, you will need to click on the attached link provided (please find attached the Survey hero link at the bottom of the page) which will take you straight to the questionnaire which you can then send back once it is completed. The answers to your questions will be written up and used for my research project.
A timescale of five weeks from 26th December 2017 to 31st January 2018 will be given to complete the questionnaire.
The deadline to complete and return the questionnaire is 31st January 2018.
Are there any risks or benefits involved?
This is a study about women’s past experiences of PND which some people may find upsetting. You do not have to answer any questions which you feel uncomfortable and can withdraw at any time before questionnaires are sent back. If any issues do arise, you can find contact details of the Women’s Health Information and Support Centre (WHISC) and Net mums stated at the bottom of the page.
If you have had Postnatal depression and you do wish to take part, this gives you the opportunity to voice your own views and experiences on what you feel is most important to you and help raise awareness of this devastating illness.
Will my taking part in the study be kept confidential?
All participants will be none identifiable, you will not be asked for your personal details at any time and any information you provide will only be used as part of this study. Personal data will be stored on my LJMU computer which password protected.
