the first steps I would say is to sit her down and ask her if she would like some help with the baby so that she can get some rest and sleep. The next step for you is to go to the website for the association of postnatal illness (http://www.apni.org/)which is absolutely brilliant and an authority on the subject and phone through to their helpline, they help both mothers and fathers and they are really understanding and kind. Hi Darren

The best thing my husband did for me when I was unwell was he said "I need you to know that I'm in this
for the long haul - no matter how long it takes". This was hugely reassuring for me because I thought he deserved better and had heard that some husbands walk away when the going gets tough. He also said "hey one day I may be sick and I will need you to take care of me". The other most helpful thing I was told by my Mum was "you will get through this - I know it feels like forever but it will end and things will get better" Sure enough things have got better and a lot quicker than I expected.
