Yes you can. But the same things apply as for any other disability. I have been considering it too as my "depression" has gone on a long time.
The main thing I think is you have to had it three months and expect it to continue for a while longer maybe another six months before getiing anything.(but I would have to check that)
So you need to have doctors and professionals support that it is a long term thing.
Also you have to consider its impact on your daily life - not the illness itself.
Its the impact it has on you and you alone-not the housework or the kids or any one else. One example is argrophobia and need ing someone else with you. to get out.
I am not sure of all of this myself as I have not applied as its not easy to get as the response at the DWP seems to depend on who you get to look at it-not fair but tru.But still worth a try.
Good luck
Maybe we can share experinces - I have the form but scared-as I no longer have Cpn support. I would find it hard to get it.

It is very hard and always getting harder to get! But don't give up! Do appeal! i am so sorry about this.
But i got low rate care ( around £15 )a week ,after appeal and then tribunal a year later -for my psychical problems ( similar to cystic fibrosis!!!) And that was back in the 1990's!!!
Tony Blair is good at getting tough on the sick!!!! Sorry I should get off my soap box. thinking of you and if you need some one to bounce off - I am good at that!!!
