Hi all,
How do you know if it is definately teething??
Isabelle has been cranky all afternoon, moaning constantly, wanting her bottle/not wanting her bottle, i did her temp and its 37.3, which is higher than normal ( is this ok? ). chewing her fist and biting down on things - is it teething?

Hi Lana,
It sounds like it could be teething, with the biting things and chewing on stuff, its very difficult sometimes as they can seem to be teething for ages before anything actually appears. Sometimes if you feel her gums you might feel a harder bit or be able to see the whiteness under the gum. Sometimes too they get flushed cheeks ( or just one cheek!) or are more slavery. Do you have a teether ring which you can put in the fridge? and some people have talked about crystals, not sure what they are called. Anyway I hope this helps, and I hope you have a better day tomorrow
take care

Thanks Susie, I have a fridge full of teething stuff ( richard went a bit OTT when i sent him for some bonjela and A teething ring ) It seems to make her happy when we give her one of them and she has had rosy cheeks for about 2 months. Its just the H.V keeps telling me she is too young but I dont think 5 months is too young. Thanks again. Lana x

hi lana, yes it does sound like teething hunny. My lil uns drool constantly, have flushed faces, off their food, and put anything and everything into their mouths to chew down on including thier fists.Like susie was saying it doesnt mean the teeth are imminant in there arrival im afraid it could take some time . Normall the bottom front two or the top front two teeth come through first and can sometimes see little white spots where they are pushing close to the top of the skin. Cool teethers are good,so were my fingers at first when i could not comforts them in any other way when crying. Boots do sachets of homeopathic powder/crystlys that you put into the mouth. Also health food shops like holand and barrett do them. The brand one is called TEETHA by the firm callled NELSONS. the boots one is their own brand but i found both effective. They mainly contain camomile and i tried a sachet and they taste good.Bonjela is ok but i found it a nightmare to actually get it on the right spot so never knew if it worked. Rusks are good as they dont break off in the mouth and disolve but not without giving a good chomp first and that also helped mine.and mummy loves rusks too Hope this helps hunny. love and hugs wendy

Hi Lana
One of my girls suffered with teething when she was 3 months old and yet didnt get her teeth until 8 months so i think that your hv is a little off the mark saying that Isabelle is a little young.
I have used the teething crystals from boots, medised, dentanox, calgel, bongela and anbesol and i dont actually know if they worked or not but i still use them. My little one is 9 months and has just cut her first 2 teeth so i know i have another 18 to go! Another thing you could try is bickie pegs for her to chew on. My first baby never put anything in her mouth and so these didnt work with her but some people swear by them.
Hope some of this helps

i have always used Ashton and Parson's teething powders its homeopathic, and I have to say works wonders.
My little one alwys gets bad nappy rash and often a cold when she is teething badly, and if it gets really bad, it is acceptable to give them an occasional dose of Calpol.
Also my hv recommended sucking on an icepole, but dont open it (very messy).
Hope that helps

Hi Lana
It sounds like teething to me too. I have used teething powders and they do seem to help. One thing I would suggest though is to be careful when you put them in her mouth. They are like coarse powder but I know the first time I tried them Joanna tried to inhale them and ended up coughing a lot. I tend to put them on a spoon now and she will eat them no problem.
Sometimes it helps if they have something to chew on and I know a few people suggested a clean face cloth put into the freezer for a while. I have also tried most of the gels and liquids - I think that you just have to find one that works for you. It always helps to have Calpol on standby. My hv also suggested a peeled raw carrot that has been in the fridge for them to gnaw on but you just have to keep an eye on them so that they don't choke.
I hope that some of this helps

I hope isabelle is getting on well with her teething.
Lydia sprouted 2 new teeth, and I didn't notice them, she has a very lopsided smile now cos she has all the teeth to one side, and she is still teething, it's never ending isn't it.
Well all my love to anyone with teething babies.

My little one is teething too. She only got her first two bottom teeth about 10 days ago and she is nearly 10 months old. They all get them at differnt rates. My others all got their first teeth by 8 months and so it doesnt follow suit even with siblings.

Hi Lana
I thought it was fab when Jo got her first tooth too. The novelty does wear off though when they learn to bite with their newly acquired teeth!!

Hi all,
Wondering if I am supposed to start brushing isabelles teeth/gums now? she has had a tooth come through, well its only just come through the gum but i can see and feel it. So should i make sure i brush it or not? seems a bit pointless at the mo but what do you girls think?

Hi Lana,
I would just get a soft first toothbrush and have a go at brushing it, even at this stage if its not a proper cleaning exercise it will get her used to the idea of you brushing her teeth, which can sometimes be fun!
best wishes

hi lana, i got a finger brush made from a rubber latx with rubber bristles which fits over your finger and you can rub the gums and teeth to get them used to it.i got mine from mail order on a form i found in a bikkie peg box.but i believe that boots sells them too. when your bab is a bit older you can give them a baby brush to hold and if you sit them on your lap when you are cleaning your teeth they copy you very well and it becomes a fun time too.
