I was wondering about the symptoms of teething. Liam is eight months and is cutting his first five teeth, he is irritable, dribbling a lot, biting anything he can get hold of and biting me when I breast feed him but there is something that I am worried about and I wonder if it is normal when a baby is teething which is he coughs so much that he looses his breath, especially at night, he doesn't have a cold. Does anyone else have this experience?

Hi Moe
I had a similar experience with my second child (little boy) around teething and when I had PNI, these symptoms really made me panic (and scream actually?!) I sometimes thought something worse was about to happen - like he'd stop breathing or choke to death on his own mucus, but of course this never happened. My daughter was never quite as bad as this with teething..so I wasn't really prepared for it. He's over this now though, although when he gets a cold or virus he coughs so hard, goes so red and appears to be struggling to breathe..it still momentarily scares me. My husband said the other day that he is definitely a 'baby' prone to coughing, spluttering and choking away -whether it's teething, food or cold/ virus.
Hope little Liam feels better soon, Hopefulxx

We used 'Bickie Pegs' from Boots when he was much younger, which they can happy chew on and dribble for Britain! I think a pack cost £1.89 When he was weaning, we tried toast which also helped - although I was initially very worried that he'd choke , but he was fine. A real toast addict now. We used (and still do eat) Sainsbury's Organic Stoneground rather than anything white, because it is so much heavier than white bread and really gives weaners something to bite onto. Overall, his teeth came through relatively easily - we did not lose additional sleep to this problem - and I would attribute it to the toast hardening his gums up during the day. I hope others have the same luck

Hi Alik I agree, we got the bickie pegs too and toast works now if nothing else does..or dry biscuits like rich tea. Unfortunately second time round we have been very unlucky with teething - but I know at some point it will get easier Hopefulxx

hi moe, i know the feeling my little one is teething and both his top ones came together so it was a nightmare. he found it so stressful bless him, he was constanly in pain so i gave astons and parsons powders ofr the pain and a teething ring to chew on but for some reason he likes my fingers better lol. with his teething he keeps getting coughts and colds so i asked my h.v and she told me to use baby snuffle babe and karvol capsules because the coughts and snuffles often happen with teething. do you find your little keeps getting a soar bums aswell. if so is there anything you would recommend cos my little man keeps getting nappy rash and sudocream doesnt seem to work keep in touch love hannah xx

Hiya mum xx
Metanium is very good for sore bottoms (you can buy this from any chemist). A little goes a long way. Also try letting your little ones lie on a towel without a nappy on (if not crawling or rolling everywhere!). If bums are really sore clean them with warm water and not baby wipes.
Medised (has a little sedative in so good at night time) or nurofen (not asthmatics) for children is good for teething.
There are also teething powders out there which can help (Ashton & Pearson spring to mind).
If your babies are dribbling +++ put Vaseline on their chins to stop them becoming sore. Also don't rub the chin as this will stimulate the salivery glands to produce more..dab the chin gently.
Hope this helps
