Hi all I think I have decided what I will do about this already but I just wanted to see if it has happened to anyone else.... My LO recently turned one and I have been weaning her onto whole (cows) milk in her bottle in morning and evening for a while by chopping and changing between formula and cows milk. Once she turned one I then made them all cows milk but she simply refuses to drink it. She will take one gulp and just push bottle/cup away. I tried it in a beaker instead but nope. So in desperation I put her back on 'baby' milk so she was at least getting something and she guzzles the lot, morning and evening! I have now got some of the 'progress' milk in and she is happily drinking away. Am gonna keep her on that for a few weeks before trying again with cows milk - I think she just doesn't like it. Do I carry on trying to wean her onto it, or do I wait till she is two when the progress milks say to stop using them? Are the progress milks any good for them - yes they say they are but all HVs have told me is they are a marketing ploy really....? Any advice or similar experiences gratefully received.... xx

Hmmm difficult. They do need about a pint of milk a day for the first two years of their lives. It sounds really harsh but you could just offer her the cows milk or nothing? Perhaps when she realises thats where it is at she might accept it?
Not got much advice reallt as didnt have this propblem with my LO - but will put my thinking cap on x

Yeah tried that - the past two weeks, have just offered cows milk and she just point blank refuses it.....pushes it away and cries.
That's when I thought of trying again with the baby milk cos she hadn't had a milk for ages and it panicked me a bit. She hasn't had a pint of milk a day for probably months now which I mentioned at her 11 month check up and they said as long as she gets calcium other ways it is ok - she eats shed loads of cheese so that's good.
But the complete lack of milk for a couple of weeks made me resort back to the formula.....
Thanks anyway WG, am still thinking too and might see HV tomorrow on way back from docs. Will see what they say too....

Hi Nicola,
My eldest (now 11 yr) was the same. I breastfed him til he was one and he wouldn't take cows milk, so I gave him strawberry milk and chocolate milk from age 1 instead, and he loved it... In fact he still drinks it now.
Let us know what your HV says.

Now there's a thought...will try and get some Nesquik next week then, I like Nesquik too! Spoke to HV today and they said don't worry about her having milk in bottles if she really doesn't want it. Some babies/kids just don't like milk. She said use the Progress stuff if she needs it as a comfort before bed (which she doesn't, she really isn't fussed) but if not then drop her bottles completely. As long as she is getting yoghurt and cheese every day she will get enough calcium, oh and if it is her breakfasts too. So am much happier now - will keep the formula cartons for if she doesn't eat well during the day or is teething and stop stressing about her having bottles morning and evening. Might try her with milkshakes though at snacktime, with a biscuit and see if she like it! Thanks for your help and will be interesting to see if anyone else had this problem.... xx

You can try mixing formula and cow's milk. The idea is to do say 7 ozs formula, 1 of whole milk. After a couple of days do 6 ozs formula, 2 of whole and so on.
I know a few who have tried this successfully. Having said that, my niece is 2 and 1/2 and hurls her half and half accross the room. The girl loves her formula!

Ooh Nesquik yoghurt drinks - sounds good! Will look out for them next time - ta. Yeah a friend of mine suggested the half and half method too so might try that as well. Like you say if she hates it that much she will still refuse it, so I will know for def then! 2 and a half and still buying formula - think DH will have heart attack!! So many things to try........makes it very interesting! xx

Hi, I made a schoolboy error when offering my LO cows milk for the 1st time.. I gave it cold, didn't even occur to me to heat it then I couldn't understand why she wouldn't take it. My hubby had to point out that she'd had warm bottles for a year then I offered this cold muck! Warmed it up to a bottle temp in a cup and away it went down her neck. This was at 1 yr, she's 2yr 4 mo now and I still have to heat her milk a bit! Don't worry about giving LO progress milk, like formula milk there's nothing in them to harm kids, my strapping, energetic girl had nothing but formula/progress milk for her 1st year and she's fine (well obviously she had food too but i mean in regard to milk!!)! If LO is getting calcium in other ways then there's no problem. Good luck with the Nesquick..yummy! xx
