I just thought I'd start a thread about this - as this is a powerful tool that I am using in various aspects of my life and within my therapeutic setting at the mo'.
I was sceptical at the outset, but am actually starting to become quite a firm believer in this!
You do not actually have to believe in this technique however for it to work, but mentally need to tune into the requirements of the tapping.
It is based on the premise that mind and body are inextricably linked - which IS something I believe in, having suffered terrible physical symptoms during my depression etc.
Basically, my understanding is that it is about nudging out negative emotions - allowing logic and rational thought to enter back into the mind - if that makes sense.
It is very simple to do - and basically I think it works because it focuses on meridian points/ acupressure, but also, affirmation of self (acceptance) is important (hard, but important) and it's a damned good distraction/ relaxation technique too!
It can help to diffuse strong emotions such as fear and anger - practice is necessary, but it really only takes minutes.
I think Scarlet put a good video which demonstrates it, in this section, but basically you tap the following points in sequence:
1. the base of your right hand (little finger side) with the fingers of your left hand. Say ''even though....then state the problem, anxiety, physical pain, discomfort etc....I accept myself (if you are not comfortable saying this, alternative = I am trying to accept myself). ''
Work through the problem verbally and keep affirming that despite the problem, you accept yourself (this is the bit you need to believe in)
e.g. ''even though I am anxious about this meeting, I accept myself, even though I am worried about feeling faint or dizzy, I accept myself..''
2 - 5. tap around your eye - left, above, right, below
shortened statements e.g. ''anxious and fearful'', ''worried about speaking'' etc.
6. tap beneath your left arm, near bra strap - as for 2-5 above - short statments
7. tap your chest - left hand side above your breast - as above - short statements
8. tap your head - centre front, as above + ''I accept myself''
This can be repeated - the more you do it, the more effective it is!
I'm still on a learning curve with this - but will keep you posted.
I have found it particularly helpful, BTW, with inner child work, where you have to accept that child you once were (and who is still part of you). Very powerful and healing
Sorry I have wittered on!
