I am looking for advice and experience on taking SJW, I have been taking it once a day for a while and noticed a difference although minimal; I have asked my GP but came out with no answer apart from "heard it helps some people" and became very wary of changing the dose as she said it can interact with other meds and above all to not overdose on it... As I am still struggling I am considering increasing the dose. I have just seen on internet www.nwmhft.nhs.uk/Pharmacy/stjohnswort.htm that it can be taken up to 3 times a day!? Has/Is anyone taking that much, and what do they find it like, does it help, is it much better than just 1 a day? I guess I must also make sure of the concentration of what I am taking... sigh... I have been thinking also of taking some "nutracalm" sort of tablets but during the day to calm me down, has/is anyone taking those? Also on the same shelf as the above there was some milk thistle... what is it for exactly (am going to have a look right now)? Desperately hopeless helpless yours, Aline

Hi Aline,
Not sure i can give you the answser you are looking for but wanted you to know that you aren't alone in looking for alternatives. Could you speak to the shop assistants in the health shop where you buy your SJW?? they should be trained to give dosage information and should be able to tell you what is safe to take alongside it.
As far as i know Milk Thistle is a liver detox remedy, its meant to be great for hangovers and it cleans out the liver of all the alcohol toxins. Not sure it would help but again try asking the stafff in the shop where you go.
Its a shame your GP wasn't much help eh? is there another one at your practice that you could see maybe?
Hope this helps in some way although i know its not really answered your questions.

Hi Sarajay, Unfortunately, my health shop is no other than Tesco that's about the only place I can make it to these days... But I guess I should look into it and try to get to a ... Holland and Barrett for example, you think? Or I guess a chemist, actually. The thing is, I am convinced they will dismiss me when I say that I am breastfeeding... as because of lack of research it is not recommended while breastfeeding. Thank you for the info the milk thistle, I guess it won't be very useful for hangovers in my case as I never get those anymore, and in a way god thanx for that, LOL!!!

Hi Aline,
Sorry didn;t realise that you never actually said where you bought your SJW from!!! DUH!! I know what you mean about being convinced about being dismissed. Does it advise on the bottle/tub not to take when breastfeeding? Will have a little dig around the great world wide web to see if i can find anything out for you, not sure what else to advise really. Don't lose faith hun, i;m sure theres info out there somewhere.
Will get back to you on this!

Hi Aline
The best people I think to ask would be your pharmasist. They tend to take alternative therapies a bit more seriously than your gp and tend to have a bit more knowledge.
I read a survey recently that proved that St Johns Wort was a BETTER remedy than prozac - and without the side effects!! Wish I had done it myself...

Aline, just me again......
Can;t seem to find any firm evidence however have come across quite a few forums with mums taking SJW whilst breastfeeding without any side-effects. I would imagine if you are already taking it and not seeing any ill effects to your little bubs then it should be ok, although, i;m not a qualified medical practitioner so don't take my word for it!!
Alot of the advice for NOT taking it whilst breastfeeding mainly states that due to lack of research they advise not taking it!! which to me suggests that although there are no/few reports of side effects they can't guarantee it and just covering their own backs??? but again don;t quote me on this.
Maybe you could try increasing to 2 tablets a day and see how you get on? you know your own body and baby so will know if its not suitable and you have already mentioned it to your GP so they are aware of the situation.
Hope this helps a little??
