Dear Veritee,
Thank you again for the continuing support you have given me about the publication of my book ‘Eyes without Sparkle – a journey through postnatal illness’. (Full details at www.radcliffe-oxford.com/books/bookdetail.asp?ISBN=1+85775+655+X ).
I just wanted to update you and wondered if you would consider doing another feature?
I have been overwhelmed by positive feedback about my book from both groups and individuals. Due to its success I have been on national television and radio; featured in more newspapers and journals plus invited to speak at conferences. Currently work is in progress for my story to be made into a film! The production company are currently short-listing for a screenplay writer and considering which actress could play me! It’s quite surreal! I am also likely to be involved as a consultant to the film.
I have decided to take a break from teaching to pursue any avenues with my book and am currently aiming to:
Share my messages with relevant groups, students and trained staff via lectures and conferences.
To continue to help reduce the stigma associated with mental illness and to reach individuals by media coverage and promotion of my book.
To become involved on a local and national level to improve services for mental health problems relating to childbirth.
It is the final aspect I need some help with. I have been asked to represent service users on a group looking to put a bid in to improve facilities for mental health problems relating to childbirth. It has become clear from meetings I have attended that there is limited information about actual numbers of ladies affected by postnatal mental health problems. I would also like to know of examples of good practice. Due to my book several ladies have told me of their stories around antenatal and postnatal depression, some good, some not. These have been most enlightening and I would love to hear more.
In order for us to inform and plan for improvements I would be most grateful if your members would be willing to send me their stories, e.g.
1. How sufferers were affected and the consequences of the illness.
2. How they were/were not treated.
3. If their treatment was not as good as it could have been, what could be better?
4. If they were pleased with their treatment, what were the best features?
5. Are there any long term effects of their illness?
Armed with this information I can then report back to local/national meetings and will aim to help to build a better system for the mums of the future. The stories can be anonymous but hopefully they will help to build an overall picture of what is or is not happening.
Emails can be sent to me at eahews@btinternet.com or by post to
