Hi everyone!
I have heard/read in a few places that it is not advisable to take the contraceptive pill soon after childbirth as it can be a contributing factor towards PNI/worsen it.
My baby was born in September and as far as I know i had no signs of PNI/PND. I started the pill in November...at first i thought it was strange that it did not improve my (awful) PMT, i was still as irritable as ever....but all month round!
I am not saying it has contributed, just wondered what the current thoughts are on this.
My gp says it's got nothing to do with it but i have decided to stop using this method of contraception for the moment to see if it makes a difference.

Yes I heard it mentioned on 'This Morning' and it got me thinking as I too went back on the pill as soon as I had my first period. Maybe all those extra hormones screwed us up!

I also heard this on this morning - I have just recently gone back on the pill and showed the tape to my husband.
His response was - is that why you have been worse over the past couple of months?
It made me think - my doc came and prescribed me the pill the day I came home from hospital - i took it for a couple of months (until i started to feel bad) and then just could not manage to remember to take it, so stopped until a couple of months ago when, as i said, i feel a little worse again.
Who knows ......

HI
I am not sure if I should add this and I am not saying that what I have done is right two weeks ago I stopped taking the pill BUT I also started on my new tablets the same week so not sure if it is one or the other. I feel a little better, still having the bad days but I am having the good times too.

Hi everyone,
I am interested in this thought as I too had my son in September and started to take the pill in November and that was when my pni started, I have since stopped taking it due to problems with headaches which I have had in the past on the pill. Could have been a factor as I do think that in my case my sypmtoms are related to my cycle,

Just to let you know that my gp will not let me go onto the pill as they say it can upset the hormones again and this can contribute to you getting worse. this is only my gps opnion but she is adiment with this and also if taking medication it can effect the effectivness of the pill anyway (it isnt as safe) hope this helps you.

Hi Wileykit, There is some evidence of the contraceptive pill causing worsening PNI, but it stems from the ''hormone'' school of thought. Katherina Dalton in her book 'Depression after childbirth' mentions this but her rreasoning is vague and i feel not helpful. On one hand she advocates progesterones for PMS and PNI. She says avoid the 'pill' and injections, contraceptive implants, and although not mentioned specifically -I would include the hormone coated Coil in this too.
But from the GP's and Obstetric/gyneacology viewpoint there is no research evidence to suggest the contraceptive Pill and the other 'hormone' related contraceptives make PNI worse. I personally think its a bit like most of the 'treatments' suggested. Basically you have to try what is best for YOU. Don't rule it out, give it a go but see how YOUO feel on the pill or off it. Weigh up all the options because if you do ''take chances' and if being on the Pill makes it safer for you then stay on it. However if you feel ''better'' off the Pill make sure you have another form of contraceptive available because you dont want another pregnancy complicating your lifestyle at present.
In summary i would suggest look at all of your life and not just the contraception. If the pill works for you and keeps you free of the risk of pregnancy then fine. Try being off it for a few months but just keep one eye on other factors making the PNI worse, such as not eating regularly, keeping your stress down, getting enough sleep, rest without the children or baby and help with housework if possible.
If I find anything specific about the contraceptive Pill and PNI I will give it to Veritee to post on here.
Love Deborah xx
