Hi all
I am about to return to work part time myself after having my first LO and was wondering what most people choose for their childcare options, if they work.
Most of my friends use nurseries but we are planning to use grandparents and so I thought I would set up this poll just to see what people nationwide are doing.

We use the nursery as both felt more comfortable with that then a childminder and my parents both work full time so that wasnt on the agenda. I am really pleased we sent her to nursery. She loves it and gets so much out of it.. Not so keen on the bill though,, she has 4 days a week and we pay about £520 a month!!

Blimey WG that's expensive hun. My sons school fees for International school aren't as much as that per month.

Hi, I work part time (on mat leave just now but normally work 24 hours/wk) and LO goes to private nursery 3 afternoons a week. Felt a bit guilty to start but SO GLAD I put her now, her development and social skills are coming on so much and she loves being with other kids. Think it prepares her for school too, she will understand structure and interaction which I can't provide 1 to 1 at home. I personally didn't put her prior to 18 months old as there was no need. I used my mum for (FREE!!) chilcare from 6 months-18 months until I changed jobs and could no longer do this. LO loved her time with Granny and I couldn't fault it, they bonded so well during this time. Mum even complains now that I don't use her enough for babysitting!!!!  They're so different but equally good methods of childcare, LO will thrive in both environments! x |

Good to see we are not the only ones using grandparents for free - and grandparents love it too! Interesting to see how muh LOs love nursery though too....

Mine bothw ent to Nursery and now both going to school (well, from Septenber) + breakfast and out of school club.
It's not cheap, but no regrets!

Hopeful, I'm in your boat. My eldest starts school in Sep and is already doing breakfast club and afterschool club 2 days a week from preschool. My youngest is at nursery. This months childcare costs = £530 for 2 and a half days at nursery and the B4 and afterschool club 2 days a week. Unbelievable isn't it? If only I had parents closer by than a 4 hour drive, but then most days I'm glad they're all that far away  Both girls love their childcare and the eldest is sooooo confident which I largely put down to her experience of childcare. x |

My little one goes to nursey too. Both me and the hubby work full time and she is really enjoying it....although the bill per month is £1100 yep really....but as long as she is happy it is worth it although will try and find somewhere cheaper next year

Common theme running through here..how expensive nurseries are!! Even though I live out in the sticks my daughter's nursery charges city prices..I think i might be in the wrong job!!  On the flip side, looking after other people's kids for 10 hours a day? No ta!! Another bonus/drawback depending on how you see it is that your kid's immune system gets a good work out when at nursery, some parents have no qualms about putting their snotty nosed, coughing spluttering brats to nursery instead of keeping them home so they don't infect the others! My daughter has had numerous ailments (nothing serious but things she never would have had otherwise) Oh yes I see all from my pedestal while polishing my halo!! ;D xx |

I work three days per week shifts (my partner is full time shifts) but we manage to get the childcare down to 2 days per week, which works out at generally £360 for our childminder. Although my eldest only really goes there when we are at work after school, my youngest goes twice after nursery until about 5pm come rain or shine!!!
I went back to work when my eldest was 5 mths old and I couldn't find a nursery that would take on babies near to us, so someone recommended my childminder. She is wonderful and the whole family treat my kids as a member of their family not just someone she is paid to look after. They have loved it from day one and have interaction with other kids there. In fact we've become really good and close friends with the whole family.
Our work joined up with a nursery voucher scheme which means you change your contract and nursery/childminder fees are taken from your gross pay. Might be worth looking to to save a few quid.
My siister's son goes to a nursery which he loves. she pays about £400 month for 2 days per week. He loves it there adn they have webcams so you can log on and see what your little on is up to.

Love the idea of her going to nursery at least one of the days I work, cos she will love being with the other kids.
Am paranoid about leaving her with other people at the moment but like the idea of webcams so you can log on and see what they are up to during the day - might look into the nurseries round here. we have loads. Not sure about the cost though?! Wow!
