My LO is absolutely petrified of having her hair washed.
She has loads of it (three cuts in her first year needed) and so I wash it probably twice a week but those days are just traumatic. I dread her bathtime all day and put it off until it is in dire need of doing.
I have tried laying her down on my arm and puring the water back, I have tried using the shower head but they both result in screams, kicks, splashes, tears and tantrums.
I was hoping she would slowly get used to it but it is just getting worse and we both now hate it. My DH just won't do it atall, so it is left up to me to be the baddie.
I have just ordered one of theose shampoo shields off ebay to see if that will help but anyone had this problem/got any other ideas?
Thanks
xx

Hi Nicola - yes with both!! My son is still bad at 4! It is traumatic - the only thing I have found that works is speed and then distraction and/ or bribery!!

Hi I've found the key to be a tiny tiny amount of shampoo (just enough for a slight lather, no more) then squeezing a sponge over her head (avoiding eyes while singing very loudly!) to rinse it out. Yep you might be left with a few bubbles and Lo's hair may have jam in sometimes but 99% of the time it'll be clean enough! The key is in the singing I've found and I give LO a sponge of her own to soak me with, no tears when the hilarious splashing of mummy is going on! There's also a jug thing with a lip that seems to seal over LO's forehead to keep the water out eyes. I've seen it in the NCT catalogue. xx

Ok so tried the shampoo shield and there was still LOTS of screaming but not as much as before. It does work a bit and keeps the worst of the bubbles and water out of her face but think she is now just generally petrified of having it done whatever so will take a bit of practice... Forgot the singing but will do that next time too. xx

Hi ladies,
I totally sympathise with you all.
I have 4 year old twin girls, with long, thick curly hair (they are mixed race) and they both hate having hair washed.
Speed and distraction is the key. What i do is whichever one is having their hair washed ( they bath together) gets to hold and play with a bath toy while im doing it. It distracts them a little bit. They also like it if I grab a handful of the shampoo bubbles off their head for them to smell and touch with their hands. They scoop it up, sniff it and pretend its snow , fluff or whatever! Seems to help a little.

Hello When I first read your thread a couple of weeks ago, I thought, thank goodness my little boy has never gone through this and generally loves water even when poured over his head. Then the very next bath-time he got in a fuss about hair washing! Just shows that I shouldn't think these things! After a bit of trial and error and a few upsetting bath-times, one thing that did work was to put a little rubber duck in the jug of water being poured over his head, and he liked that the duck was then running down his back - even though really it was just shooting off in to the air!
He also has always hated his face being washed, so I bought a bath sponge/puppet in the shape of a fish and he's happy now for the fish to wash his face.
Hope your daughter accepts hair washing soon.
Flo

I must be a terrible mum as I just let my LO go off on one hysterically whenever I wash her hair! I have tried nothing to pacify her, just tell her its only water and to calm down ehile she screams her lungs out! LOL x

Lol winegirl, wish I could do that with my two! They scream so loud I fear that eventually panes of glass will start to shatter around us ;D
The most annoying thing....when we were on holiday they loved being in the water, the salty, stinging sea water, it got in their hair, their eyes, and they never flippin moaned once....gggggrrrrr kids !!!
